To begin i would like to emphasise that the use of digital technologies is only suitable when there are clear learning benefits and outcomes for students (Week 3, ICT).
Digital technologies have changed the ways of learning. There has been a powershift in recent years whereby students are now able to become responsible for their OWN learning. The role of the teacher has become more of a facilitator rather than an expert (Week 3, ICT).
I have created below my own SWOT activity, so i can expand on my understanding and learning about the impact of digital technologies on the role of the teacher within schools.
Please feel free to contribute.
If you would like more information i found a great website that provides more ideas about the Impacts of ICT on learning and teaching!
*Not central to the teaching and learning process
*Lack of teacher training on new technologies
*Lack of research and data to support
*What about those with disabilities? Will technology support everyone?
Opportunities
*Positive impacts when ICT learning is linked to pedagogy during teaching.
*The development of individualised learning for students
*Online tutorials and Comupter Aided Instruction (CAI) has been proven to improve student performance.
*ICT can be varied and adapted in accordance to the subject and lesson.
*Placing computers and digital technologies in classrooms can enable higher order thinking skills.
Threats
*Technology can be put before education
*Can ICT replace the role of the teacher in schools and classrooms?
*Only effective when clear goals are set.
*A mismatch between the methods used to measure effects and the nature of the learning promoted by the specific uses of ICT may occur.
